Best Tires for the BMW M5

The BMW M5 is a 600+ hp performance sedan that uses staggered tire fitments — wider rears than fronts — to manage the massive power from the twin-turbo V8. Getting tires right on an M5 is critical: the wrong compound wastes the powertrain and leaves performance on the table. The wrong load rating risks safety under the M5 combined weight and cornering loads. This guide covers what to buy.

BMW M5 tire sizes by generation

The F90 M5 (2018 to 2023) uses a staggered fitment: 275/40R19 front and 285/35R20 rear on the standard Competition wheels. The optional 20-inch package on the Competition uses 265/40R20 front and 295/35R20 rear.

The G90 M5 (2024 to present) is now a plug-in hybrid and uses 275/35R20 front and 285/35R21 rear on 20/21-inch staggered wheels. Verify your exact sizes on the door sticker — M5 wheel packages vary and the staggered fitments are not interchangeable.

Staggered tires cannot be rotated front-to-rear. Each axle wears independently. Monitor rear wear separately — rear tires on the M5 can wear significantly faster under hard acceleration.

Best summer tires for the BMW M5

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S — the benchmark for the M5. Available in all common M5 staggered sizes including the 275/40R19, 285/35R20, 265/40R20, and 295/35R20. The PS4S is the factory-specified tire on many M5 configurations and delivers the balance of outright grip, precision handling feel, and usable wet traction that the M5 demands.

Pirelli P Zero Corsa — for M5 owners who track the car or want maximum outright performance. The Corsa is a track-focused street tire with exceptional dry grip and precision. It is less suitable for daily use in variable weather compared to the PS4S.

Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 — a competitive summer alternative at lower cost than the Michelin. Available in M5 sizes. Strong dry and wet performance with a slightly softer limit behavior than the PS4S.

Sport all-season options for year-round M5 use

Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 — the best year-round option for M5 owners in markets with occasional cold weather. Available in key M5 sizes. The PSAS4 gives up a small amount of peak summer performance for all-weather capability. At 600+ hp, this trade-off is very acceptable.

Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus — Pirelli year-round performance all-season for the M5. Available in select M5 sizes. Good balance of summer-leaning performance with all-season usability.
