How to Buy Tires — What to Know Before You Shop

Buying tires does not have to be confusing. If you know your size, understand the tier structure, get three quotes, and know what to ask at installation, you will make a good decision every time. Here is the complete process.

Step 1: Find your tire size

Check the driver's door jamb sticker — this is the authoritative source for the tire size your vehicle's manufacturer recommends. It shows recommended tire size AND the inflation pressure.

The size format is: [width]/[aspect ratio]R[rim diameter] — e.g., 225/60R17. The P or LT prefix indicates passenger or light truck. Load range letters (C, D, E) matter for trucks that tow.

Your current tires also display the size on the sidewall. You can replace with the same size or ask a shop about compatible size alternatives.

Step 2: Choose a tire category

All-season: the default for most passenger cars and crossovers. Good in rain, adequate in light snow, designed for year-round use.

All-weather (3PMSF): stronger than all-season in cold and snow. The practical upgrade for most drivers.

All-terrain (A/T): for trucks and SUVs that go off-road or on rural unpaved roads.

Performance all-season: for sport cars and performance-tuned vehicles — more grip in dry and wet but shorter tread life.

Winter: dedicated cold-weather tires for drivers in persistent snow and ice conditions — swapped seasonally.

Step 3: Choose a brand tier

Mid-premium ($120–200/tire): BF Goodrich, Falken, Toyo, Yokohama, Cooper. Close to premium performance at 20–30% lower cost.

Step 4: Get three quotes

Call or visit three shops. Ask for: tire cost per tire, mounting and balancing per tire, TPMS reset fee, disposal fee, and total installed cost for four tires.

Online retailers (Tire Rack, Discount Tire, SimpleTire) show competitive pricing. Many ship to local installers — ask your shop if they will install tires you purchased elsewhere (most will, at a per-tire labor fee).

Compare total installed cost, not tire cost alone. A cheaper tire at a shop with higher labor charges can cost more than a pricier tire at a full-service shop.

Step 5: Ask the right questions at installation

Have the TPMS sensors checked and reset (not just the light turned off — actual sensor programming).

Ask for a four-wheel alignment check — new tires on misaligned wheels will wear unevenly from day one.

Ask if valve stems are being replaced — rubber valve stems harden and crack over 5–7 years and should be replaced at tire installation.

Get a receipt that shows the tire brand, model, size, and DOT date code — you may need this for warranty claims.
