Tire Speed Rating Explained

Tire speed ratings are letters that indicate the maximum sustained speed the tire is designed to handle safely. They appear in the tire size — for example, in 225/55R17 97H, the H is the speed rating. Here is what each rating means and why it matters.

S — 112 mph (180 km/h): common on light trucks, SUVs, and some sedans.

T — 118 mph (190 km/h): standard all-season tires for passenger cars.

H — 130 mph (210 km/h): the most common rating on sports sedans, coupes, and performance-adjacent passenger cars.

V — 149 mph (240 km/h): entry-level performance cars, sporty sedans.

W — 168 mph (270 km/h): performance cars.

Y — 186 mph (300 km/h): high-performance and ultra-performance vehicles.

ZR — above 149 mph, with the exact limit indicated by a W or Y pairing.

Why speed rating matters beyond top speed

Speed ratings are not just about how fast you drive. They reflect the tire's ability to handle heat at high speeds — tires rated for higher speeds use rubber compounds and construction that dissipate heat more effectively.

At interstate speeds in Georgia summer heat, a tire approaching its speed rating limits will build heat faster than one well below its limit. A T-rated tire on a performance car that is pushed hard will degrade faster and is more prone to failure than an H or V-rated tire.

What happens if you use the wrong speed rating
