The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 makes 760 hp from a 5.2L supercharged V8 — it is one of the most powerful production muscle cars ever built. It uses a Tremec 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and staggered Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires from the factory. Tire selection must handle the power, weight, and staggered fitment.
GT500 tire sizes
The Mustang Shelby GT500 (2020 to 2022, its final model year) uses a staggered fitment: 305/30ZR20 front and 315/30ZR20 rear on Shelby-specific 20-inch wheels. Both sizes are low-profile 30-series tires — there is very little sidewall.
The stock GT500 comes with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires in both sizes from the factory. These are properly matched to the GT500 performance specification — a thoughtful OEM choice that most owners should understand before replacing.
Best tires for the GT500
Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (305/30ZR20, 315/30ZR20) — the OEM tire and the benchmark replacement. Factory-specified on the GT500 and properly matched to its extreme power output. Both staggered sizes are available. Outstanding dry grip, wet performance, and progressive limit behavior. The definitive replacement recommendation.
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 (305/30ZR20, 315/30ZR20) — for GT500 owners who track the car or want maximum dry performance. The Cup 2 is what the GT500 Carbon Fiber package uses from the factory. Exceptional dry grip at the cost of wet weather capability and tread life.
Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R (305/30ZR20) — track-focused semi-slick for GT500 owners who run HPDE events. Available in the front size; rear availability in 315/30ZR20 is limited.
Frequently asked
What tire size does the Mustang GT500 use?
Staggered: 305/30ZR20 front, 315/30ZR20 rear on 20-inch Shelby wheels.
How much do Mustang GT500 tires cost?
305/30ZR20: $280 to $420 per tire. 315/30ZR20 rear: $290 to $440 per tire. A full staggered set of four installed runs $1,140 to $1,720.
Can I run all-season tires on a GT500?
You can find max-performance all-seasons in the staggered sizes, and they make the car usable on cooler days when summer tires go hard and slippery. But a car with this much power asks a lot of any tire, and you give up meaningful dry grip going all-season. Most GT500 owners keep summer or track rubber and simply do not drive the car in the cold.
Why do the rear tires wear out so fast on a GT500?
All that power goes through the rear wheels, and the staggered setup means you cannot rotate the rears forward to even things out. Hard launches chew them up quickly. Expect to replace rears as a pair well before the fronts, keep the same tire model on both ends, and go easy on the throttle if you want them to last.
