An E-rated tire is a light-truck or trailer tire built to Load Range E — the modern equivalent of a 10-ply rating, almost always with a maximum cold inflation of 80 psi. In common sizes that works out to roughly 3,200 to 3,750 pounds of capacity per tire. That is a lot of tire, and it is the right tire for a three-quarter-ton truck, a heavy trailer, or anything that regularly works near its weight rating. It is also, on a half-ton truck that never hauls anything, a heavier and harsher tire bought for capacity that never gets used. This guide covers both halves of that.
What the E actually means
Load range is a letter branded on the sidewall — B, C, D, E, F and up — that describes how much air pressure the tire's casing is built to hold, and therefore how much weight it can carry. E sits near the top of what a normal consumer buys. On a light-truck tire it corresponds to 80 psi maximum cold inflation.
The "10-ply" part is a leftover from the bias-ply era, when the letter really did count layers of rubberized fabric in the casing. Modern radials get the same strength out of two or three polyester body plies plus steel belts, so nobody builds a literal 10-ply passenger or light-truck tire anymore. The industry kept the old number as an equivalence, which is why you will see "Load Range E (10-ply rated)" on the same sidewall as a tire with three plies in it. Both statements are true. The letter is what matters.
Load range is not the same thing as load index. Load range describes the casing's pressure capability; load index is the two- or three-digit number in the service description that translates directly to pounds. An LT265/70R17 marked 121/118R is load index 121 as a single tire and 118 in a dual application. Index 121 is 3,195 pounds. Two tires can both be Load Range E and carry different weights, because they are different sizes — read the index, not just the letter.
How much weight an E-rated tire actually carries
The table below lists common E-rated fitments with their published maximums. Note the pattern: every one of them tops out at 80 psi cold, and the capacity climbs with the size, not with the letter.
A word on the dual number. Where you see two figures — 121/118, 125/122, 126/123 — the first is the tire's capacity mounted singly and the second is its capacity as one of a pair on a dual-rear-wheel axle. Duals are derated because the two tires share heat and because a load never sits perfectly evenly between them. If you are on a single-rear-wheel truck, the first number is yours.
The other thing worth noticing: these are maximums at maximum pressure. A Load Range E tire run at 45 psi is not carrying 3,195 pounds. It is carrying whatever the tire maker's load and inflation table says it carries at 45 psi, which is considerably less. Capacity and pressure move together, always.

When you genuinely need E-rated tires
Your door-jamb placard calls for it. This is the whole answer for most people. If the sticker on the driver's door frame specifies an LT tire in Load Range E, the vehicle was engineered around that capacity and going lower is not a preference, it is running the axle over the rating of the rubber under it. Three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups almost universally land here.
You tow near your rating. Tongue weight on a conventional hitch is typically 10 to 15 percent of the trailer's loaded weight, and every pound of it lands on the tow vehicle's rear axle on top of whatever is already in the bed. A 7,000-pound trailer is putting 700 to 1,050 pounds on the hitch before you load a cooler. Gooseneck and fifth-wheel pin weights run higher still — commonly 15 to 25 percent — and they land directly over the rear axle.
You carry weight for a living. Slide-in campers, tool and service bodies, mulch and gravel, hay, feed, welding rigs. If the truck spends its life loaded, the reserve capacity is not wasted; it is the reason the tire runs cooler and lasts longer.
You want the casing for reasons other than weight. Load Range E tires are also harder to puncture from the sidewall, which is why off-road and overland builds often run them well past what their payload requires. That is a legitimate reason to buy one — just be honest that you are buying the sidewall, not the capacity.
When E-rated is the wrong tire
On a half-ton truck or a body-on-frame SUV that never hauls, an E-rated tire is mostly a penalty. The capacity you paid for sits unused while three real costs show up every day.
Weight. A Load Range E tire typically runs on the order of 10 to 15 pounds heavier apiece than a standard-load tire in a comparable size — a figure widely quoted by tire retailers rather than measured in a lab, so treat it as a ballpark. That is unsprung, rotating mass, which is the worst place to add weight. It hurts acceleration, braking, and the suspension's ability to keep the tire on the road over bumps.
Ride. The stiff casing that carries 3,700 pounds does not soften up just because the bed is empty. On an unloaded truck the sidewall barely deflects, so impacts that a lighter tire would absorb come through to the cabin instead. Owners who have gone from a C or D load range to an E on the same truck consistently describe the ride as noticeably firmer, and that is not a break-in issue that goes away.
Fuel. Heavier tire plus more rolling resistance costs mileage. Retailers commonly put the hit around 1 to 2 mpg. That is a vendor figure rather than an EPA measurement, but the direction is not in dispute.
The honest test: look at the door jamb, then look at what you actually put in the truck over a year. If the placard does not require E and your heaviest month was a load of mulch, a Load Range C or D tire in the same size will ride better, cost less, and still be over-built for the job.
The 80 psi mistake
The single most common error with E-rated tires is inflating them to the number on the sidewall. That number is the maximum cold pressure the tire is built to hold at its maximum load. It is a ceiling, not a recommendation.
For a light-truck tire on a vehicle, the pressure you run comes from the vehicle's door-jamb placard, not the tire. Running an empty half-ton at 80 psi gives you a tire crowned in the middle, riding on a strip of tread, wearing the center out and skating over wet pavement. Many trucks specify something in the neighborhood of 35 to 50 psi for daily driving and a higher rear pressure when loaded — and the placard, not the internet, is where that number lives.
The exception is trailer service. ST trailer tires genuinely are intended to run at or very near their maximum sidewall pressure, because a trailer axle is always carrying near its rated load and has no suspension geometry to protect. That difference between vehicle tires and trailer tires trips up a lot of people who own both.

E-rated trailer tires are a different animal
Load Range E shows up on trailer tires too, and it means the same thing about the casing — 10-ply equivalent, 80 psi — but the tire itself is built differently. An ST (Special Trailer) tire in Load Range E has a stiffer sidewall than an LT tire in the same size and load range, because it is resisting sway and lateral load on an axle that is neither driven nor steered.
In practice, ST225/75R15 in Load Range E is rated around 2,830 to 2,860 pounds at 80 psi depending on the maker, and ST235/80R16 in Load Range E runs about 3,420 to 3,520 pounds. Those are lower numbers than an LT tire of similar diameter, which surprises people — the ST tire is smaller in section, and it is the size, not the letter, doing the work.

What E-rated tires cost, and buying them in West Georgia
E-rated light-truck tires span a wide range because the size range is wide. In a common truck size like 265/70R17, retail listings in August 2026 run from roughly $92 per tire for house-brand all-seasons up to about $390 for premium mud-terrains, with the well-known all-terrains — the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3, for instance — landing near $230 to $300 apiece. Bigger 18- and 20-inch fitments sit higher.
Whatever the price, budget for the whole job rather than the tire: mounting and balancing a set of heavy E-rated truck tires is more labor than a set of car tires, and shops usually charge accordingly. Ask for the out-the-door number including mounting, balancing, valve stems or TPMS service, disposal, and tax.
