Jeep Tire Upgrade Guide

Upgrading your Jeep's tires is one of the highest-impact mods you can do — better off-road traction, more aggressive stance, and clearance for harder trails. But getting the sizing right for your specific Jeep and lift height is where most people get tripped up.

Stock tire sizes and what's possible

A stock Wrangler JL Sport runs 255/70R18 (about 32") and can fit 33" tires with no modifications — just a leveling kit or nothing at all on some trims. Moving to 35s typically requires a 2" lift minimum and possibly minor fender trimming. 37s need a 3.5"–4" lift and suspension work.

Gladiator owners have slightly more clearance by default due to the longer wheelbase and different fender geometry — 33s and 35s often drop in with minimal work.

Top tire picks for Jeeps

BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain KM3: the trail benchmark. Excellent self-cleaning in mud and rock crawl traction. Significant road noise — worth it if you trail-drive regularly.

BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2: the best do-everything option if you want one tire for trails and daily driving. Siped for snow, proven off-road capability, acceptable highway manners.

Falken Wildpeak M/T01: underrated mud-terrain option, strong sidewalls, better highway manners than the BFG M/T for the daily-driver crowd.

Nitto Trail Grappler: aggressive M/T with more road-friendly noise levels. Popular for Jeeps that see both pavement and trail.

Toyo Open Country M/T: excellent mud clearance and durability. A solid choice for serious off-roaders.

What else do you need with bigger tires?

Lift kit: 33s often need only a leveling kit or no lift; 35s usually need 2"; 37s need 3.5–4". See the leveling vs. lift kit guide linked below.

Re-gearing: going from 32s to 35s or 37s puts your factory gear ratios out of spec — the Jeep will feel slow, tow poorly, and strain the drivetrain. Most serious builds re-gear to 4.56 or 4.88 to compensate.

Alignment: mandatory after any lift. Caster and toe change with suspension modifications.

Fender trimming: on Wranglers going 35s with stock fenders, some trimming of plastic (not metal) liners may be needed for full suspension articulation.

Frequently asked

What is the biggest tire I can fit on a stock Jeep Wrangler JL?

33" tires fit most stock JL trims without modification. A small spacer lift or leveling kit gives extra clearance. Moving to 35" typically requires a 2" lift.

Do bigger Jeep tires hurt fuel economy?

Yes — larger, heavier tires increase rolling resistance and rotational mass, which hurts mpg. Re-gearing partially offsets this. Expect a 1–3 mpg drop going from 33s to 37s.

Where can I get Jeep tires installed in West Georgia?

Several off-road shops across Carroll, Douglas, Paulding, Haralson & Heard counties specialize in lifted Jeeps and trucks — they can size the tires, install the lift, and align everything in one visit. Get a free quote to get matched.
