Five numbers decide whether a wheel fits your car: diameter, width, bolt pattern, offset, and center bore. Get all five right and the wheel bolts on and clears everything. Get the bolt pattern wrong and it will not mount at all. Get the offset wrong and it mounts perfectly, then rubs the fender on every bump. This guide is about finding your own five numbers, on your own vehicle, without guessing — and knowing how far each one can safely move from stock.
The five numbers, and what each one does
Diameter — the size of the wheel across the mounting bead seats, in inches. A 17-inch wheel takes a 17-inch tire. This is the number everyone knows.
Width — how wide the wheel is between the bead seats, also in inches, and usually written with the diameter: 17x7.5 means a 17-inch wheel that is 7.5 inches wide. Width sets the range of tire widths that will mount correctly.
Bolt pattern — the number of lug holes and the diameter of the circle they sit on, written like 5x114.3. This is a hard yes-or-no. A 5x114.3 wheel does not go on a 5x120 hub, no matter how close the numbers look.
Offset — how far the wheel's mounting face sits from its centerline, in millimeters, written as ET followed by a number. Positive offset tucks the wheel inward toward the suspension; less positive or negative offset pushes it outward toward the fender. This is the number that decides whether anything rubs.
Center bore — the diameter of the hole in the middle of the wheel that seats on the hub. On a factory wheel it matches the hub exactly, so the hub carries the vehicle's weight. Aftermarket wheels are usually bored larger to fit many vehicles, which is what hub-centric rings are for.
Where to find your numbers
The door jamb sticker gives you the factory tire size and pressures. It usually does not give you the wheel specs, which is the first place people get stuck. Still, write down the tire size — everything downstream references it.
The back of the wheel is the most reliable source. Pull a wheel, or look at the inner spoke face and the back of the barrel, and you will typically find the size and offset cast or stamped into the metal: something like 17x7.5 and ET45, plus sometimes a part number. This is your own vehicle's actual data, not a database's guess about it.
The owner's manual lists approved wheel and tire sizes for the vehicle, often including the alternate sizes that came on other trims. That list is a good starting envelope for what the manufacturer considers acceptable.
Failing all of that, a fitment database or a wheel shop's catalog will pull specs by year, make, model, and trim. Two cautions: trim matters enormously — the same model can come with three different wheel sizes and two different brake packages — and any prior owner may have already changed the wheels. If the specs you find do not match what is stamped on your wheel, believe the wheel.
To measure a bolt pattern yourself: on a 4-lug wheel, measure center-to-center across from one lug hole to the one directly opposite. On a 5-lug, measure from the center of one hole to the outer edge of the hole two positions away. On 6- and 8-lug, measure center-to-center directly across. Millimeters are easier than inches, since that is how patterns are specified.

How far you can move from stock
Diameter can go up if the tire's sidewall comes down to compensate. The working rule is to keep overall rolling diameter within about three percent of the factory size, because your speedometer, odometer, ABS, traction control, and transmission shift points are all calibrated to it. Go outside that and the speedometer starts lying and stability systems get bad data.
The practical version: each inch you add to wheel diameter, drop roughly 10 points of tire aspect ratio and consider adding 10 millimeters of tire width. A 225/60R17 becomes roughly a 235/50R18, then a 245/45R19. Any tire retailer's size calculator will confirm the actual diameters.
Width can grow, but the tire has to fit the wheel — every tire size has a range of approved rim widths — and the extra width has to go somewhere, either inward toward the suspension or outward toward the fender, depending on offset.
Offset is the tight one. A change of a few millimeters is nothing. Fifteen or twenty millimeters is the difference between clearing a strut and not. On lifted trucks, a substantially lower offset is the point of the exercise, which is why fender flares and mud flaps come along for the ride.
Bolt pattern does not move at all without adapters, and adapters are a separate decision with their own trade-offs.
What actually causes rubbing and vibration
Rubbing on the outside — against the fender lip or inner liner, usually under compression or at full steering lock — means the wheel and tire package sits too far out. Too little offset, too much width, or too tall a tire.
Rubbing on the inside — against the strut, the control arm, or a brake line — means it sits too far in. Too much positive offset for the width you chose is the usual cause.
A brand new vibration right after a wheel install, at all speeds or scaling with speed, that survives a rebalance, is very often center bore. If the wheel is bored larger than your hub and no hub-centric rings were fitted, the wheel is being centered by the lug nuts rather than the hub, and it is essentially impossible to get it perfectly concentric. Rings cost a few dollars.
One more that gets missed on trucks and SUVs: load rating. A wheel has a maximum load rating, and on a heavy vehicle, especially one that tows, an under-rated wheel is a genuine safety problem even when every dimension is correct. Check it explicitly.
The checklist before you buy
Write down your five numbers, from the wheel itself where possible. Confirm the bolt pattern by measurement rather than by assumption if the vehicle is not stock.
Confirm brake clearance if your vehicle has larger-than-standard brakes, or if you are going down in diameter from the factory size. Some wheels simply will not clear certain calipers, and this is not visible from a spec sheet.
Plan for the parts around the wheel: hub-centric rings if the bore is larger than your hub, lug nuts if the seat type differs from factory, and TPMS sensors — either transferred from your old wheels or new, plus the relearn procedure.
And if you are on a lifted truck, verify offset with the lift installed rather than against factory specs. That is the single most common expensive fitment mistake in this category.

Will new wheels affect my TPMS?
They will if the sensors do not come along. Sensors live inside the wheel, so they either transfer from your old wheels during mounting or you buy new ones, and either way the system usually needs a relearn procedure afterward. Confirm with the shop before the job, not after the light comes on.
Do I need new tires if I change wheel size?
Only if diameter or width changes. Same-size wheels take your existing tires for the price of mounting and balancing. A different diameter means different tires, and that cost is frequently larger than the difference between two sets of wheels.
