Coolant leaks range from a $60 hose clamp to a head gasket job that costs more than the car is worth, and the leak itself gives you very little indication which one you have. What it does give you is a deadline. An engine that overheats badly enough warps the cylinder head, and that turns whatever the original cheap leak was into a four-figure repair. So the useful framing isn't what a coolant leak costs; it's how quickly you find out where it's coming from, because a leak found early is almost always the cheap version of itself.
How to know you actually have one
The obvious sign is a puddle. Coolant is usually bright green, orange, pink, yellow, or blue depending on the formulation, it's slippery rather than oily, and it smells distinctly sweet. That smell is the one most people notice first, sometimes through the vents at a stoplight before they ever see a drop.
The quieter signs matter more because a lot of leaks never make a puddle. A coolant reservoir that keeps dropping between fill-ups is a leak whether or not you find it on the driveway. A temperature gauge that climbs higher than it used to, especially in traffic or on a hot day, is a cooling system that's low or not circulating properly. A heater that blows cold at idle and warm at speed is a classic low-coolant symptom, because the heater core sits high in the system and is the first thing air pockets starve.
White crusty residue or dried colored streaks around hose ends, the radiator seams, or the water pump are evidence of a leak that evaporates before it drips. Steam or a sweet smell from under the hood after shutdown is the same thing at a higher rate. And thick white smoke out the exhaust with a sweet smell means the coolant is going into the engine rather than out of it, which is the expensive version.
Where coolant leaks come from, cheapest to worst
Hoses and clamps are the most common and the cheapest. Rubber hardens, cracks, and splits with heat and age, and clamps lose tension. How a shop finds the source
The standard first step is a cooling system pressure test. A hand pump pressurizes the cold system to its rated pressure and holds it, which forces a leak to show itself while nothing is hot or spinning. Many leaks that only appear at operating temperature are visible in seconds this way.
When pressure testing doesn't find it, UV dye is the next tool. A fluorescent dye goes into the coolant, the car gets driven, and a UV light shows exactly where it's escaping. This is how slow leaks behind pulleys, under intake manifolds, and at the back of an engine get found.
If the coolant is disappearing with no external leak at all, the shop should run a combustion leak test, a chemical block tester that changes color in the presence of combustion gases in the coolant. That's the test that confirms or rules out a head gasket, and it's worth insisting on before anyone quotes one. It's also why you shouldn't accept a head gasket estimate that came from a visual inspection alone.
Can you keep driving with a coolant leak?
Not for long, and not at all if the temperature gauge moves. The consequence chain here is unusually direct: low coolant causes overheating, sustained overheating warps the cylinder head or cracks it, and a warped head means machine work or a replacement head on top of a head gasket job. A leak you could have fixed for $150 becomes one you can't fix for less than $3,000.
If the gauge is normal and you're topping off occasionally, you have days, not months, and you should treat the reservoir level as a countdown. If the gauge climbs into the red, pull over, shut the engine off, and let it cool. Continuing to drive an overheating engine to reach a destination is how engines die.
Never open a hot radiator cap or pressurized reservoir. The system is under pressure and coolant above its boiling point will erupt when the pressure releases. Wait until it's cool to the touch. In an emergency, plain water will get you somewhere, but it has a lower boiling point and no corrosion inhibitors, so it's a get-home measure and the system should be drained and refilled properly afterward.
Does stop-leak work?
Bottled cooling system sealer can genuinely close a pinhole in a radiator or a small seep, and for someone deciding whether to put money into an old vehicle at all, that's a legitimate use. It's also the reason a lot of heater cores end up clogged, since the same particles that plug a pinhole plug the smallest passages in the system, and the heater core has the smallest passages there are.
It will not fix a split hose, a bad water pump seal, a cracked plastic end tank under pressure, or a head gasket. Some shops will charge more to flush a system full of sealer before they can work on it.
The reasonable use is as a deliberate stopgap on a vehicle you've decided not to invest in, with your eyes open about the tradeoff. It is not a repair, and it isn't a substitute for finding the leak.
The Georgia heat factor
Cooling systems fail hardest where they work hardest. West Georgia summers put sustained load on the radiator, the fan, the water pump, and every rubber hose under the hood, and marginal cooling systems that get through winter unnoticed start showing up in June and July. A cooling system that's slightly low, has a weak cap, or has a fan clutch that isn't fully engaging will hold temperature fine at highway speed and then climb in stop-and-go traffic on a 95-degree afternoon.
