There are two completely different things people call white smoke, and they have almost nothing to do with each other. Thin white vapor that appears on a cold start, thins out as the engine warms, and disappears within a few minutes is condensation, and it is normal on every vehicle. Thick white smoke that keeps pouring out after the engine is warm, especially with a faintly sweet smell, is coolant being burned in the combustion chamber. That one is a head gasket, a cracked or warped head, or an intake manifold gasket, and it's the difference between ignoring it and not driving the car.
Is it steam or is it smoke?
Watch it on a cold morning. Water vapor is a normal byproduct of combustion, and when it hits cold exhaust pipes it condenses into a visible white cloud that looks alarming and means nothing. The tells are that it's thin, it dissipates within a few feet of the tailpipe, it stops once the exhaust is up to temperature, and it's worse on cold or humid days.
Coolant smoke behaves differently. It's thicker and it lingers as a cloud instead of vanishing. It keeps coming after the engine is fully warm. It often smells faintly sweet, which is the ethylene glycol in the antifreeze. An old mechanic's check that still works: hold a white paper towel near the tailpipe for a few seconds. Condensation leaves it damp with plain water. Burning coolant tends to leave it damp with a slightly sweet, sometimes slightly greasy residue.
The other confirmation is in the reservoir. If the coolant level keeps dropping with no puddle under the car, that coolant is going somewhere, and the exhaust is the usual answer.
What color is it, really?
Exhaust smoke color is the fastest triage tool there is, and white is only one of three answers. Blue or blue-gray smoke is engine oil burning, which usually points to worn valve stem seals, worn piston rings, or a failing turbocharger seal. Black smoke is too much fuel: a leaking injector, a bad mass airflow sensor, a stuck-open fuel pressure regulator, or a clogged air filter.
White is coolant, or in a diesel it can also be unburned fuel from a failing injector or bad injection timing, which usually comes with a rough-running engine and a raw fuel smell rather than a sweet one.
It's worth being honest about how the light plays tricks. Thick white and light blue smoke look very similar in daylight, and a lot of people arrive at a shop convinced they have a head gasket when what they actually have is an oil-burning engine. If the coolant level is stable and the oil level is dropping, it's oil, not coolant.

What causes coolant to burn in the engine?
A blown head gasket is the headline cause. The head gasket seals the joint between the cylinder head and the engine block, and it has to hold combustion pressure on one side while keeping coolant and oil passages separated on the other. When it fails between a coolant passage and a cylinder, coolant gets pulled into the cylinder and burned. Overheating is what usually kills it, and that overheating almost always traces back to a cooling system problem that was ignored.
The other causes look the same from the tailpipe. A cracked cylinder head or a warped head produces the same symptom, and a head that's been overheated badly enough often has to be machined or replaced along with the gasket. On some V-configuration engines a failed intake manifold gasket lets coolant into the intake ports, which produces white smoke for a much smaller repair bill. On a turbocharged engine, coolant leaking through a failed turbo seal will do it too.
This is why a proper diagnosis matters before anyone quotes a head gasket. A shop should do a cooling system pressure test and a combustion leak test, which uses a chemical block tester that changes color when it detects combustion gases in the coolant. Those two tests separate a $300 intake gasket from a $3,000 head gasket job.
What does the repair cost?
A head gasket replacement is one of the most expensive common repairs there is because almost all of it is labor. RepairPal's national estimate is $2,543 to $3,337, of which $1,633 to $2,397 is labor. The parts are relatively cheap; the engine has to come substantially apart to get to them. On larger or harder-to-access engines it climbs from there, with RepairPal's estimate for something like a Ram 3500 running $4,097 to $4,939.
That number sets up an uncomfortable but honest math problem. On a vehicle worth $4,000, a $3,000 head gasket job is close to a total loss, and a lot of drivers in that spot are better off putting the money toward a different car. On a vehicle worth $15,000 with an otherwise healthy engine, it's usually worth doing, especially if the head hasn't been cooked.
The cheaper outcomes are worth ruling in first. An intake manifold gasket, a failed turbo seal, or a cracked coolant hose feeding the wrong place all cost a fraction of a head gasket. And if the smoke turns out to be blue rather than white, valve stem seals and rings are a different repair with a different price.
Can you keep driving it?
Not far, and not if the temperature gauge is climbing. Coolant going out the exhaust means the cooling system is losing fluid, and an engine that overheats badly warps the head, which turns a head gasket job into a head gasket plus machine work or a replacement head. Continuing to drive can also hydrolock the engine if enough coolant pools in a cylinder while it sits, and hydrolock bends connecting rods. That's an engine replacement.
If the gauge is normal and the smoke is light, you have some room to get it looked at this week rather than tonight. If the gauge is above normal, if the heater is blowing cold, or if the coolant reservoir keeps emptying, stop driving it and have it towed. A tow is a rounding error next to a replacement engine.
Head gasket sealer in a bottle deserves an honest mention. On a small, early breach it occasionally buys time. It is not a repair, it can clog a heater core and a radiator, and some shops won't touch an engine afterward. If you're using it, understand you're buying weeks, not years.
Getting a real diagnosis in West Georgia
Ask the shop to pressure-test the cooling system and run a combustion leak test before quoting anything. Ask whether they've checked the oil for coolant contamination, which shows up as a milky film on the dipstick or under the oil cap.
