When you get a wheel alignment, the shop will specify two-wheel (front only) or four-wheel alignment. The difference matters and affects cost, what gets corrected, and which is appropriate for your vehicle.
What two-wheel (front-end) alignment does
A two-wheel alignment adjusts the front wheels only — setting camber, toe, and caster on the front axle. This was the standard alignment type for older vehicles with solid rear axles, where the rear wheels have no adjustability.
For vehicles where the rear axle geometry is fixed and non-adjustable (most trucks with solid rear axles, some older SUVs), a two-wheel front alignment is the correct service. Attempting to align the rear of a solid-axle vehicle is not possible.
What four-wheel alignment does
A four-wheel alignment measures and adjusts all four wheels — front camber, toe, and caster plus rear camber and toe. Modern passenger cars, crossovers, SUVs, and most light trucks with independent rear suspension require a four-wheel alignment because the rear wheels are adjustable.
If you have an independent rear suspension (IRS) vehicle — which is nearly every modern car and crossover — you need a four-wheel alignment. A two-wheel alignment on an IRS vehicle leaves the rear wheels unchecked and potentially misaligned, causing uneven rear tire wear.

Which alignment type do you need?
If your vehicle has independent rear suspension (all passenger cars, crossovers, SUVs, most modern trucks): four-wheel alignment. This is the correct service for the vast majority of vehicles sold in the last 25 years.
If your vehicle has a solid rear axle (older trucks, Jeep Wrangler with solid axle, older Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500/3500): two-wheel front alignment is appropriate, because the rear axle is not adjustable.
When in doubt: four-wheel alignment is never wrong for an IRS vehicle. It checks everything. Two-wheel alignment is only correct for specific solid-axle configurations.

For a solid-axle truck, though, you're not gaining anything, since there's nothing to adjust in back.
