LT (Light Truck) and P-metric (Passenger) tires look nearly identical on the shelf, but they are engineered differently for different load requirements. Choosing the wrong type for a truck or SUV that tows or carries heavy loads is a safety issue. Understanding the difference prevents a dangerous mistake.
How to Tell LT from P-Metric
The tire size itself tells you the type. LT-metric tires begin with LT: LT285/70R17. P-metric tires begin with P: P265/70R17 or have no prefix at all (275/65R18 without a prefix is a P-metric or Euro-metric in the US market).
Flotation sizes (33x12.50R17, 35x12.50R17) are LT sizing. The absence of a 'P' prefix on this format indicates LT construction.
If a tire size starts with LT, it is built to LT standards. If it starts with P or has no prefix, it is P-metric. This distinction appears on the tire sidewall — the actual installed tire, not just the sticker size.
Load Capacity Differences
LT tires use a Load Range system (B, C, D, E) instead of the P-metric Load Index system. Load Range E (10-ply rating) is the most common heavy-duty LT truck tire.
P-metric tires use a standard load (SL) or extra load (XL/RL) designation. Extra-load P-metric tires are inflated to a higher maximum pressure to carry more weight.
A P-metric tire converted to LT equivalent loses about 10% capacity. The LT spec requires a P-metric tire to be derated when used on light trucks at commercial loads — a 2,700-lb P-metric tire carries only about 2,430 lbs in LT service.
For trucks used near their maximum payload or GVWR: LT tires are the correct choice. For trucks used primarily as daily drivers without heavy loads: P-metric is adequate and usually quieter and more fuel-efficient.

Towing and Payload Considerations
Trucks rated for 2,000+ lbs of payload or significant towing should use LT Load Range E tires when operating near maximum loads. P-metric tires on an overloaded truck can fail from sidewall flexion and heat buildup.
Many trucks ship from the factory with P-metric tires — this is fine when the truck is used within its P-metric-rated payload capacity. When the truck is upgraded to aftermarket off-road tires, most owners switch to LT sizing.
Check your truck's door jamb sticker for the OEM tire type. If the OEM tire was LT, maintain LT sizing on any replacement.

Do I need LT tires on my half-ton truck?
Depends on use. If you regularly tow near capacity or haul heavy loads: LT Load Range E is the safe choice. If your half-ton is primarily a daily driver: P-metric in the correct size is adequate and often better for fuel economy and ride quality.
Can you put LT tires on a passenger car?
Technically yes, if the size fits. LT tires are heavier, stiffer, and have higher rolling resistance — they increase fuel consumption and reduce ride comfort significantly on passenger cars. Not recommended unless there is a specific load or durability reason.
Are LT tires better for off-road?
The LT construction (stiffer sidewall, more plies) resists sidewall punctures and damage better during rock crawling. Most serious off-road tires (KO2, Wildpeak M/T, Trail Grappler) are LT-rated for this reason.
Do LT tires cost more than P-metric?
Usually, yes. The heavier construction and higher load range push the price up, and they often wear a bit faster and cost you a little at the pump from the extra weight. For a truck that actually tows or hauls near its limits, that's money well spent on safety. For a truck that mostly commutes, a good P-metric in the right size is cheaper to buy and to run.
How do I know which one my truck needs?
Start with how you use the truck and what the door-jamb sticker says. If the factory tire was LT, stay LT. If it was P-metric and you rarely load or tow heavy, P-metric is fine and rides nicer.
