Self-sealing tires add a viscous polymer sealant bonded to the inner liner. When a nail, screw, or similar object punctures the tread, the sealant flows into the hole and vulcanizes around the intruding object, maintaining tire pressure. The driver may never notice the puncture until a routine inspection. Toyota, Lexus, and several European automakers use self-sealing tires as OEM equipment on a growing number of models.
How Self-Sealing Tires Work
A self-sealing tire is a standard tire with an additional sealant layer — typically 3 to 5mm of synthetic polymer — bonded to the inside of the tread area. When a pointed object penetrates the tread, the sealant layer immediately flows into the puncture channel and begins vulcanizing (hardening) around the intrusion.
The sealant works around the object while it remains embedded and continues to seal even if the object is removed — up to about a 5mm diameter hole. The tire maintains full operating pressure with no driver intervention required.
Self-sealing technology does not use reinforced sidewalls like run-flat tires. This means a self-sealing tire rides as comfortably as a standard tire and carries no penalty in ride quality or handling.
Self-Sealing vs Run-Flat vs Regular Tires
Self-sealing tires seal most common nail and screw punctures while maintaining pressure, allowing normal driving to continue indefinitely. They do not handle large impacts, sidewall damage, or blowouts.
Run-flat tires allow driving after total pressure loss — up to 50 miles at 50 mph. They do not seal punctures; they survive on zero pressure. Run-flats have reinforced sidewalls that compromise ride quality and cost significantly more.
Regular tires with a spare are the most flexible system: any damage size can be handled (replace the tire). But they require physically changing the tire on the roadside or waiting for assistance.
Self-sealing tires offer the best handling and ride quality among these options and address the most common failure mode (nail punctures) silently and automatically. Their limitation is large punctures and sidewall damage, which they cannot address.

Where Self-Sealing Tires Come Standard
Toyota and Lexus are the most prolific users of self-sealing OEM tires. Bridgestone and Michelin supply self-sealing variants (called DriveGuard Seal or Michelin Acoustic Self-Sealing) for Toyota platforms. Many Toyota RAV4, Camry, and Lexus RX models come with self-sealing tires from the factory.
Pirelli offers the SealInside technology across multiple tire lines including the P Zero and Cinturato families. Continental uses ContiSeal technology on selected touring and SUV tires.
When replacing a self-sealing OEM tire, check whether your vehicle came with self-sealing tires standard. Replacing them with non-sealing tires eliminates the protection and the in-cabin experience of never knowing you ran over a nail.
Limitations of Self-Sealing Tires
Puncture size limit: self-sealing technology is effective up to approximately 5mm (3/16 inch) diameter. A wood screw, nail, or small bolt is typically within this range. A larger impact — a rock, road debris, or sharp metal — may exceed the sealant capacity.
Location matters: self-sealing protection covers the tread area only. A sidewall cut or puncture is not addressed by the sealant layer. Sidewall damage always requires a replacement tire regardless of self-sealing capability.
Repairability: a tire repaired by its own sealant can still be patched conventionally in many cases, provided the damage falls within standard repair limits. The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association's puncture repair guideline caps a proper plug-and-patch repair at 1/4 inch (6mm) in diameter, confined to the tread's center area — anything larger, or any damage reaching the shoulder or sidewall, calls for replacement. Tire technicians still need to inspect the sealant layer carefully before patching; some sealant formulations require cleaning before a standard plug can be seated correctly.

Do self-sealing tires affect ride quality?
No. Unlike run-flat tires, self-sealing tires have no reinforced sidewall. The sealant layer adds minimal weight (typically 1 to 3 lbs per tire) and does not change the tire structure. Ride quality, handling, and NVH performance are essentially identical to a standard non-sealing tire of the same model.
How do I know if my car has self-sealing tires?
Check the tire sidewall for markings: Bridgestone uses Enliten Sealtire or DriveGuard Seal; Michelin uses Acoustic Self Sealing; Continental uses ContiSeal; Pirelli uses SealInside. Your owner manual will also specify if the vehicle came with self-sealing tires. If no spare is included, check whether the OEM tire is self-sealing or run-flat.
Can self-sealing tires be repaired?
Yes, in most cases. A small puncture that has been sealed can be patched conventionally if the sealant is cleaned from the repair area first. The patch procedure is the same as a standard tire. Large punctures or sidewall damage follow the same rules as any tire — they typically require replacement.
Are self-sealing tires more expensive?
Typically 10 to 20 percent more than a comparable non-sealing version of the same tire model. This is significantly less than the 30 to 60 percent premium for run-flat tires. Many drivers consider the price difference worth it given that a single roadside flat prevention event more than covers the cost difference.
