TPMS warning lights come on more in winter than any other season. The reason is straightforward physics: as temperature drops, air in tires contracts, and PSI falls. For every 10 degrees Fahrenheit drop in temperature, tire pressure decreases by approximately 1 PSI. A tire at 35 PSI on a 75-degree day will be at approximately 31 to 32 PSI on a 35-degree morning.
How much PSI you lose in cold weather
The relationship between temperature and tire pressure is approximately 1 PSI per 10 degrees Fahrenheit change. This means a tire inflated to 35 PSI at 70 degrees will drop to 31 PSI at 30 degrees — a drop of 4 PSI.
Most TPMS systems trigger a warning light when tire pressure drops 25 percent below the recommended level. For a tire specified at 35 PSI, the warning triggers around 26 PSI. A cold morning in January may not trigger the warning, but the 3 to 4 PSI drop still affects handling, fuel economy, and tire wear.
When to add air in cold weather
Check tire pressure in cold conditions — tire pressure specification assumes a cold, non-driven tire (less than 1 mile driven, parked for at least 3 hours). If you check pressure after driving, the heat of operation inflates the reading by 4 to 6 PSI above the true cold reading.
If tire pressure is more than 4 PSI below the door sticker specification on a cold morning, add air. TPMS does not prompt you until the deficit is significant — a manual check is more sensitive.
Don't bleed air to reduce pressure after driving on cold mornings. What you're seeing is artificially high pressure from the heat of driving, not a true reading. Add air as needed after parking, once the tires have cooled.

What happens with chronically low pressure in cold weather
Under-inflated tires generate more heat, wear unevenly (primarily at both outer edges), reduce fuel economy, and handle less precisely in corners. In cold weather, these effects are compounded by harder, less pliable rubber.
Every 1 PSI of under-inflation reduces fuel economy by approximately 0.1 to 0.2 percent. A tire running 5 PSI low costs 0.5 to 1 percent fuel economy annually — measurable on a commuter vehicle.
