A bad wheel bearing starts as a faint hum or whirring noise and works its way up to a growl, then a grinding. The defining characteristic is that it tracks road speed, not engine speed: the pitch rises when you go faster and stays the same when you shift gears or rev in neutral. The second defining characteristic is that it changes when you sway the car left and right, because steering shifts load from one side to the other. Those two tests separate a wheel bearing from the two things it's most often confused with, worn tires and a driveline noise, and they're free.

What a failing wheel bearing sounds like

It usually starts quiet. Kelley Blue Book describes it as beginning as a faint hum or whirring noise, and that's exactly right: most people notice it first on a smooth road at 40 to 50 mph and assume it's the pavement or the tires. As it wears further it becomes a growl or a droning roar, and at the end it's a grinding or rumbling you can feel through the floor or the seat.

The two speed relationships are the whole diagnosis. Wheel bearing noise changes with vehicle speed and is unaffected by engine speed, so it stays the same pitch when you shift into a different gear at the same road speed and disappears when you coast to a stop. Engine and driveline noises behave the opposite way.

Related symptoms show up as it worsens: a vibration through the steering wheel or floor, an ABS or traction control light if the wheel speed sensor is built into the hub (it is on most modern vehicles), a wobble or looseness you can feel when the wheel is jacked up and rocked, and in advanced cases uneven tire wear on that corner.

The sway test: which side is it?

This is the single most useful check and it costs nothing. Find an empty stretch of road at the speed where the noise is loudest, then gently sway the car side to side, weaving in your lane. Turning left transfers weight onto the right-side wheels; turning right loads the left side.

If the noise gets louder when you turn right, the bad bearing is most likely on the left. If it gets louder turning left, look at the right side. A bearing that's loaded harder makes more noise, so the noise follows the load. If the noise doesn't change at all with steering input, that's a point against a wheel bearing and in favor of tires or the driveline.

Do this on an empty road at moderate speed with gentle inputs. The point is a mild weight transfer, not an emergency maneuver.

Ruling out tire noise first

This is the most common misdiagnosis in this entire topic, and it's expensive when it goes the wrong way. Cupped, scalloped, or feathered tires produce a hum or roar that rises with speed exactly like a wheel bearing does. Aggressive all-terrain and mud-terrain tread patterns hum by design. And a tire that's worn unevenly because of an alignment problem is loud for a reason that a new bearing won't fix.

Three checks. Look at the tires: run your hand across the tread and feel for a scalloped, wavy, or sawtooth surface, and look for uneven wear across the tread width. Note when the noise started: if it appeared right after new tires went on, it's the tires. And have the tires rotated: tire noise usually changes character or moves when the tires do, while wheel bearing noise stays exactly where it was.

It's also worth noting that a wheel bearing noise doesn't come and go with road surface the way tire noise does. If it's dramatically louder on coarse chip-seal and quiet on smooth new asphalt, you're listening to tires.

What does wheel bearing replacement cost?

Kelley Blue Book puts the average out-the-door wheel bearing replacement at about $350 per bearing before taxes, and Meineke publishes the same rough figure of about $350 for each bearing. AutoZone breaks the parts out separately: $50 to $150 per bearing depending on quality and brand, and $200 or more for a complete hub assembly.

The design your vehicle uses drives the difference. Most modern vehicles use a bolt-on hub assembly with the bearing sealed inside, which is more expensive as a part but faster to install: unbolt the old unit, bolt on the new one. Older and some truck applications use a press-in bearing, where the knuckle usually has to come off the vehicle and the bearing gets pressed out and in with a hydraulic press. More labor, cheaper part.

Per-corner labor typically runs one to two hours on a bolt-on hub and longer on a press-in setup, especially if rust has welded things together, which is less of a problem in Georgia than in the salt belt but not unheard of. Quotes above roughly $600 to $700 per corner on a mainstream vehicle deserve an itemized explanation.

How long can you drive on a bad wheel bearing?

Less far than the noise makes it feel like. A bearing that has started growling is already shedding material, and the wear accelerates as it goes. The failure modes at the end of that road are genuinely serious: excessive play that lets the wheel tilt and destroys the brake and hub, a bearing that seizes at speed, and in the worst case a hub failure that separates the wheel from the vehicle.

Practically: a faint hum you just noticed is a get-it-looked-at-this-month problem. A growl you can hear over the radio is a this-week problem. Any grinding, wobble, play in the wheel, or noise that changes with braking is a stop-driving-it problem.

The one silver lining is that this repair doesn't get more expensive by the day the way an overheating engine does. What it gets is more dangerous, and it can take the brake rotor, the ABS sensor, and the knuckle with it if it fails completely.

Do you replace them in pairs?

Not necessarily. Unlike brakes and tires, wheel bearings don't need to be balanced side to side, so replacing only the bad one is normal and acceptable practice. If the other side is also making noise, or the vehicle is very high mileage and you're already paying for the labor, doing both can make sense, but it isn't required and a shop that insists it is should explain why for your specific vehicle.

One thing that is worth doing: have the alignment checked afterward on vehicles where the knuckle came off, and have the ABS system verified since the wheel speed sensor is integrated into most modern hub assemblies. If a warning light was on before the repair, confirm it's out after.
